Let Them Take Arms

Thomas Jefferson

We are living in exceptional times just as our parents did who made it through WWII and Korea.

It is almost impossible to be self sufficient in today’s society. Government won’t allow it and in fact they see it and those that are as a threat. The liberties we’ve lost are now sold back to us in the form of permits, fees, property taxes and other user fees and other taxes.

I also find it funny that many good people I know will say that they own their own homes when in fact they pay rent to the local government, and schools through their property taxes. “Oh no… the government does not own my home, I do.” I ask what would happen to their house if they were to stop paying property taxes?

So no – we are no longer free men and women when we are shackled by financial burdens imposed upon us by our own government and not those of our own choosing. We work sun up to sun down to pay for taxes and insurance for our houses, our health, our cars and some folks even buy into the scam of life insurance. What paltry sum is left allows us to buy a six pack and a couple of hours on the lake if we’re lucky.

We are no longer free when we must stop ourselves before we use speech that someone else not only might not agree with but would also move them to silence us over their inability to handle unpleasing discourse.

We are no longer free when we must submit to the whims of a government bureaucracy and obtain a permit granting us the privilege of self-defense.

Most of us will slave over a job or a career that we may not really like just to survive. Leaving us no time and no monies to be free even if freedom were a truism in today’s society.

It’s a far cry from Lexington and Concord.

Jefferson said:
“What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.”

He was right.
