We offer both NRA Instructor Training in a variety of disciplines including BASIC PISTOL. We also can certify individuals as instructors for the MCPPA (Minnesota Citizens Personal Protection Act) or more simply put: To teach the MN Carry Permit class. Details of our Instructor offerings are below.
NRA Instructor Course
2 Day Course
$350 PER STUDENT, Minimum of 4 students required for class
If you do not have a minimum of FOUR students in your group the class can not be held
(One day Basic Instructor Training [BIT 6 hrs.] and 2nd day completion of your firearm discipline)

To qualify as an NRA Instructor:
Candidates must possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training and/or previous shooting experience. Instructor candidates must be intimately familiar with each action type in the discipline they wish to be certified.
Candidates will be required to demonstrate solid and safe firearms handling skills required to be successful during an instructor training course by completing pre-course questionnaires and assessment exercises administered by the NRA Appointed Training Counselor.
Candidates must satisfactorily complete an NRA Instructor Training Course in the discipline they wish to teach (e.g., NRA Basic Pistol Course), and receive the endorsement of the NRA Training Counselor conducting that training.
Become an NRA InstructorNRA Instructor courses are discipline specific. The first 6 hours of an NRA instructor course is NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT), utilizing the NRA Trainer’s Guide. During this portion, candidates will learn NRA policies and procedures, basic public speaking skills, , training methodology, use of a training team and training aids, organizing a course, building a budget, and finally preparing to teach. The BIT is followed by discipline specific training and will be 5 to 16 additional hours, depending on the discipline. During this portion, candidates will be provided the appropriate lesson plans and basic course student packets. Role playing is a major part of an instructor course. Candidates take turns working in teams, actually conducting portions of the course to other candidates who play the role as basic students.
If you have taken the NRA BIT within the past two years, you do not have to repeat take that portion of the instructor course. You should call us at 952-891-1537 to register for the shooting discipline portion of the class. Pricing is less than the full class where the BIT is included:
Rifle discipline: $200
Personal Protection in the Home: $250

Training Counselors will evaluate candidates’ performance based on their ability to handle the firearms with confidence, use of appropriate training aids, following the lesson plans and meeting all learning objectives, while utilizing the teaching philosophies learned during the BIT. Candidates can also expect to learn the NRA discipline specific instructional methods and evaluating and improving the performance of beginning shooters. Candidates will be provided with the NRA Trainer’s Guide, appropriate Lesson Plans and Outlines, Basic Course Student handbooks, certificates, basic student examinations, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program booklet, Basic Firearm Training Programs Brochure, Gun Safety Rules brochure, NRA Trainer’s Examination and NRA discipline specific instructor examination (minimum passing grade is 90%).

NRA Certified Instructors are expected to:
Conduct NRA Basic Courses in accordance with policies and procedures outlined by NRA
Uphold the quality and integrity of national firearm safety and training standards established by NRA
Promote firearm safety and the shooting sports
Report training data to NRA

Instructor Course for the Minnesota MCPPA (BCA Approved)
This hybrid in person & online course covers everything you need to know to become a certified instructor for the Minnesota Citizens Personal Protection Act. The course covers theories about adult learning and how to prepare your curriculum and methodologies to teach adults.
And of course, it covers our favorite topic: Firearms carry, Minnesota laws, the use of deadly force, record keeping requirements, and more! You’ll learn how to schedule and price your courses, and how to market them. Included with the course is an instructional DVD that you can use in your classroom! In addition, you will receive our own exclusive CD-Rom of course materials.
Phase One – You take our online carry course and repeat it as many times as necessary for you to feel you that you can now teach the course. Take your time to learn and study the laws and case law we discuss in the online course. You have to be expert on them to teach them.
Phase Two: When you believe you understand the course curriculum and are ready to teach, you will schedule a day to teach the course and take our basic instructor training, and conduct a range exercise. Total time is approximately 6 hours.
You must successfully complete the instruction portion of the course to be certified. This implies you have a better than average grasp on the legalities of our firearm laws and use of force laws, are able to communicate simple and complex subjects in a manner that others are able to comprehend, provide a professional appearance, and demonstrate superior speaking skills in front of an audience.

We include our own field tested and proven Minnesota Carry Course curriculum at no additional cost! Our curriculum separately sells for $350. This is a value you can’t miss!
Also required is an annual update class (at a nominal $25 to $40 per year fee) that keeps your certification fresh and current.
Must have a current MN (or other states) permit to carry and one of the following:
Proof of military service or;
NRA instructor credentials or;
Other substantial proof of familiarity with firearms (i.e. a competitive shooter)
A current Minnesota Carry Permit
Must demonstrate STRONG shooting skills
Must demonstrate STRONG interpersonal skills
Be able to coach students to better marksmanship via shooting fundamentals
MCPPA Certified Instructors are expected to:
Conduct in person Minnesota Carry Courses in accordance with policies and procedures outlined by Shade’s Landing Inc.
Uphold the quality and integrity of the course content that you have been trained to; maintain your certification by attending a once a year Instructor update
and keep accurate records of students who train with you
